What We Filtered Out
Articles removed before scoring: duplicates, non-Canadian content, and rule-based filters.
Methodology
How we separate signal from noise.
The Matter Score
Every article passes through a multi-stage pipeline. First, we filter out duplicates, non-Canadian content, and low-quality patterns. Then, a proprietary scoring model evaluates each article across several dimensions of real-world impact: how many people are affected, how deeply, and how lasting the consequences are.
The scoring process combines rule-based analysis with multiple AI models. Articles are evaluated independently. No editorial judgement, no human picks. The result is a single number: the Matter Score. Higher means more relevant to more Canadians for longer.
Quality Filters
Articles are penalized for patterns that generate clicks but don't inform: outrage bait, horse-race politics, clickbait headlines, and stories with no meaningful connection to Canada. These penalties reduce an article's score automatically, pushing substance to the top and noise to the bottom.
Why It Matters Summaries
Each article includes a one-line summary explaining why it matters. These summaries are written by AI, reviewed for accuracy, and designed to give you the "so what" in a single sentence.
